Achieve 3000
Imagine a technology program built to increase reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing proficiency. Now imagine this program supports students by providing them with activities that will assist in raising reading levels by using differentiated instruction. Achieve3000 is that program. It focuses on students’ individual needs by tailoring non-fiction articles to their current reading level.
Chester Community Charter Middle School students currently participate in the Achieve3000 program by engaging TeenBiz3000. This program leads students through a well-developed process when completing an article. First, students respond to an email before they read, accessing prior knowledge on the subject of what the article will include. They have the opportunity to summarize main ideas and topics and even listen to the pronunciation of vocabulary as they read to assist them in accommodating this new knowledge. They then recall and infer information from the text by responding to questions about the text. Students then construct a meaningful response to the text by creating a thought question, and submit their opinion regarding the article by voting in a poll.
Research has shown that students who access this program and complete at least two articles per week will increase their reading level. Achieve3000 has been an innovative technique to help students at CCCS experience information on their level, and will continue to create a comfortable avenue for students to learn.
