The Middle School - Kindergarten Connection
Every Friday, 7th-and 8th-grade students are chosen to read children’s books to Kindergarten students in West Campus, Building A, under the direction of Principal Timeka Ford-Smith. Two students are assigned to each Kindergarten room. Prior to the reading sessions, kindergarten teachers can choose what books are to be read to their students, especially for books that may tie into their curriculum. We have found that this is a “win, win” situation, because it gives middle schoolers an opportunity to build confidence with their reading skills, and it gives the kindergarteners an opportunity to see older students with books in their hands, not only reading aloud but enjoying the experience of reading.
If time allows after the reading session, Middle School students discuss the book and its meaning with the younger children.
