Passport to History
The 5th Grade students at Chester Community Charter School were visited by the Delaware Country Historical Society. Throughout the assembly, the students learned fun facts about Delaware County. For example, did you know that John Morton was one of nine signers of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania and he is buried in St. Paul’s Burial Ground in Chester? Also, Betsy Ross, the maker of the first flag of the United States of America, was said to have cut a perfect five-pointed star in one snip! The visitors then gave students the opportunity to make their own star out of paper. Each student followed directions by folding the piece of paper multiple times and was then given a pair of scissors to see if they could recreate Betsy’s perfect five-pointed star.
The Delaware Country Historical Society also gave each 5th grader a mini-passport booklet with a list of historical destinations in the area. With this passport, the students can visit any of the listed participating sites and receive FREE admission!
