Watershed & Airshed Education Program

Penn State University, Pennsylvania Sea Grant

The Watershed and Airshed Education Program is designed to promote a better understanding of the components of each school's local watershed from the Imeadwaters to the ocean. The program also helps to increase understanding of the interaction between watersheds and their airsheds, and emerging issues for the Delaware estuary.

This project engages Chester's CCCS middle school students, in classroom and laboratory preparation programs and field trips to local natural areas. A central focus of the program is to foster local and global understanding of how human activities and lifestyles impact components of the watershed (including streams, rivers, wetlands and estuaries).

The students in 6th grade will be participating in classroom training as well as embarking on a field trip to the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. The classroom teachers participate in two, half-day training sessions at the refuge to be prepared to enhance their science knowledge on the topic. Teachers practice simple lab experiments and activities that they can bring into their classrooms. All watershed topics will be integrated into our science curriculum.
