Chester Community Charter School’s mission is to equip English Language Learners with the language proficiency and independence necessary to meet or exceed state and district content standards while preserving the individual’s language and culture.

What is ESL?/ ¿Qué es ESL?

English as a Second Language (ESL) is an educational approach for students who qualify.  At registration, all families complete the “Home Langauge Survey”.  This informs Chester Community Charter School (CCCS) if another language is spoken and understood at home other than English.   If another language is used at home, a student is screened on their English abilities.  Depending on the score of the screener,  a student maybe placed into ESL instruction for extra English language support.  In ESL, a student receives services three to five times per week for 45-60 minute sessions to strengthen their English listening, speaking,reading and writing abilities.  The overall goal for ESL services is to better assist a student in being successful in both the general education classroom and daily living.

El programa de Inglés como Segundo Idioma (ESL, por sus siglas en inglés) es un enfoque educativo dirigido a los estudiantes que cumplen con los requisitos. Al realizar la inscripción, todas las familias completan la "Encuesta sobre el idioma del hogar". Esto permite a Chester Community Charter School (CCCS) saber si en el hogar se habla y comprende un idioma distinto al inglés. Si se utiliza otro idioma en casa, se evalúan las competencias del estudiante en inglés. Dependiendo de los resultados de dicha evaluación, el estudiante podría ser asignado al programa ESL para recibir apoyo adicional en el idioma inglés. En el programa ESL, el estudiante recibe servicios de tres a cinco veces por semana, en sesiones de 45 a 60 minutos, con el fin de fortalecer sus habilidades de comprensión auditiva, expresión oral, lectura y escritura en inglés. El objetivo general de los servicios de ESL es ayudar al estudiante a alcanzar el éxito tanto en el aula de educación general como en su vida cotidiana.

La misión de Chester Community Charter School es dotar a los estudiantes en proceso de adquisición del idioma inglés de la competencia lingüística y la independencia necesarias para cumplir o superar los estándares de contenido estatales y del distrito, preservando al mismo tiempo el idioma y la cultura de cada individuo.

Educational Approach /Enfoque educativo

CCCS has selected English as a Second Language (ESL) as its educational approach. ESL instruction is an academic discipline that is designed to teach ELLs social and academic skills as well as the cultural aspects of the English language necessary to succeed in an academic environment and contribute to society. The ESL program model that CCCS has chosen is a push in/pull out model.

CCCS ha seleccionado el inglés como segunda lengua (ESL, por sus siglas en inglés) como su enfoque educativo. La enseñanza de ESL es una disciplina académica diseñada para dotar a los estudiantes de inglés (ELL) de las habilidades sociales y académicas, así como de los aspectos culturales del idioma inglés, necesarios para tener éxito en el entorno académico y contribuir a la sociedad. El modelo de programa de ESL que CCCS ha elegido es un modelo de integración y extracción.

Instructional Approach/Enfoque de enseñanza

At CCCS, the ESL program uses the push-in/pull-out method of instruction. Depending on students' individual needs, ESL instructors vary their time between pushing into the regular education classrooms and pulling out students into the ESL classroom for direct language instruction.

En CCCS, el programa de ESL utiliza el método de instrucción de integración y extracción (*push-in/pull-out*). Dependiendo de las necesidades individuales de los alumnos, los instructores de ESL alternan su tiempo entre impartir clases dentro del aula de educación regular y llevar a los estudiantes al aula de ESL para recibir instrucción directa del idioma.
