Blessings in a Backpack

Blessings in a Backpack is back! This nationally recognized program, established in 2009, has been a welcomed partner of CCCS for more than ten years. Because many children in the United States receive the bulk of their nutrition in schools, Blessings in a Backpack was established to combat childhood hunger by sending students home with a weekend’s worth of nutritious food each Friday.

The program was first brought to CCCS as a pilot impacting 30 children in Innovation Hall, but it has blossomed to serve 175 students across all nine buildings at the school. In addition to expanding its reach, we have combined the resources of the Blessings in a Backpack organization with Optimum Foods, a company that creates the “Power Packs” that we send home each weekend. These packs are full of brand-name, nutrient-rich, and shelf-stable foods that even the youngest of school-age children can prepare for themselves. With the help of our school counselors and social workers, Power Packs are distributed weekly throughout the school year. From the packaging to the contents, CCCS has already heard great feedback about this new product, which provides resources to ensure a hunger-free weekend!

If you would like your child to benefit from this program, please contact you’re his or her school counselor, social worker or the front office secretary for assistance. To learn more about the organization, please visit www.blessingsinabackpack.org
