Chester Community Charter School Celebrates Literacy and Community Partnership at “Room to Read” Event
Chester Community Charter School (CCCS) welcomed scholars, educators, and community partners to its East Campus, Building A, on Thursday, March 12, 2026, for a vibrant Room to Read Literacy Event that brought together college mentors, authors, and community leaders to celebrate the power of reading and inspire a lifelong love of literacy among students.
The celebration brought together members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, including current college students from Widener University and East Stroudsburg University, who volunteered their time to read to CCCS scholars. Their presence provided meaningful mentorship and served as a powerful example of academic achievement, leadership, and service for students throughout the morning.
As part of the event, the Chester Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi generously donated 300 books to CCCS scholars, expanding access to reading materials and reinforcing the importance of literacy in every child’s educational journey.
Dr. David E. Clark Jr., Chief Executive Officer of CCCS and a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, emphasized the importance of mentorship and literacy in shaping students’ futures.
“Events like this remind our scholars that education extends far beyond the classroom,” said Dr. David E. Clark Jr., CEO of CCCS. “When our students see successful college students, authors, and community leaders investing their time in them, it reinforces a powerful message—that reading, education, and strong character can open doors to limitless opportunities. At CCCS, we are committed to empowering every scholar to believe in their potential and to pursue excellence.”
Dr. Clark also expressed gratitude for the partnership with Kappa Alpha Psi and the community leaders who helped make the day possible, noting that their mentorship and service reflect the same values of leadership, scholarship, and community impact that CCCS strives to instill in its students.
Leadership and Partnership Behind the Event
The success of the Room to Read celebration was made possible through the leadership and collaboration of Mr. Raheem Blandon and Mr. Kenneth E. Johnson Sr., both members of Kappa Alpha Psi. Their vision, coordination, and commitment to mentorship were instrumental in bringing together fraternity members, college students, community leaders, and literacy advocates to create a meaningful experience for CCCS scholars.
Their leadership reflects the powerful role that community partnerships and mentorship can play in supporting students and uplifting the next generation of leaders.
Inspirational Speakers and Storytelling
A highlight of the day was the opportunity for scholars to hear from two inspiring speakers who delivered keynote and motivational messages centered on perseverance, leadership, and believing in one’s potential.
Mr. Gerald Jackson, author of the A Father’s Love, A Father’s Message, and A Father’s Promise series, captivated scholars with heartfelt storytelling that encouraged students to believe in themselves and recognize their limitless potential. During his remarks, Jackson reminded students of the power of language and personal responsibility, telling them, “Words are powerful. The next thing you say, you could either build or destroy. You choose.”
He concluded his message with an uplifting moment of participation, asking all the scholars in the room to stand proudly and repeat together, “I am somebody,” reinforcing a message of confidence, self-worth, and belief in their future.
Mr. Kenneth E. Johnson Sr. also spoke with students, sharing the inspiring story behind his son’s book, Three Little Piggy Banks. Written by Kenneth E. Johnson Jr. when he was just nine years old, the book serves as a powerful example of youth creativity and the importance of believing in one’s voice and ideas at an early age.
During his remarks about the importance of discipline and positive habits, Johnson shared a powerful message that resonated with scholars and educators alike: “How you do anything is how you do everything.” His words encouraged students to develop strong habits, stay focused on their goals, and take pride in the effort they put into their work each day.
Together, Jackson and Johnson left scholars inspired to see themselves as future storytellers, leaders, and changemakers.
A Powerful Closing Message from Lia Valencia Key
The celebration concluded with an uplifting address by entrepreneur and motivational speaker Ms. Lia Valencia Key, whose message resonated deeply with students and staff.
Ms. Key encouraged scholars to embrace their individuality, learn from their mistakes, and remain resilient in the face of challenges. She reminded students that even when they stumble, success comes from continuing to show up, learning from setbacks, and pushing forward with determination.
Her powerful message served as the perfect closing tribute to a day dedicated to literacy, growth, and the limitless potential within every CCCS scholar.

The Room to Read event demonstrated the power of partnership, mentorship, and community engagement in shaping students’ educational experiences.

The administration, educators, and scholars of Chester Community Charter School extend their sincere gratitude to every guest, partner, and volunteer who contributed their time and passion to the event.
